Flying Shoes Rider Starts Cycling

August 12, 2006

There’s not much sweeter than spinning along on smooth pavement with good friends on a sunny Alberta afternoon. Here’s my starting place for my MS Bike Tour: 1. I have to get my bike ready; 2. I have to get my body ready to ride; 3. I have to register for the MS 150 Bike Tour and make sure I have accommodation in Camrose; 4. I have to practice riding with others; 5. I have to learn to ride with others; 6. I have to learn to fix a flat; 7. I have to put lots of miles on my bike; 8. I have to put lots of saddle time on my bum; 8. I have to ride on the highway; and finally 9. I have to keep ‘er going for Michele.

Why Am I Riding?

I have been running now for a couple of years and on July 1, 2006 made a decision to ride in the 2007 MS 150 Bike Tour with Team Pronto of St Albert, Alberta. I didn’t even own a bike at that time! My next step was to get a bike and start training.

So now I have a bike and I have been putting some miles on it. I have been training through the fall and will get back on the road in the spring. I have lots of work to do.

The 2007 MS 150 Bike Tour will be my very first but not my last! The brochures say it’s a ride and not a race. I know I won’t be racing against other riders to the finish but I will be racing against time. My good friend Michele has MS. It is clear to me that there is a purpose to the ride other than simply for fun. I will be riding with Michele in mind. I will smile when I am straining on the hills on my way to Camrose. I know I will be moved by the great number of people I meet along the way. All of us will be riding for a similar purpose. We’ll be riding to help find a cure so that others will not have to go through what my friend Michele endures every day. My struggle will be for 2 days. Michele’s struggle is everyday!

Michele was diagnosed with MS almost 15 years ago. She has been in a wheel chair now for almost 10 years. Michele is my inspiration and she is the one that is motivating me to get out there and ride.

The 2007 MS Bike Tour will be an opportunity for me to raise money in the fight against MS. This is an unpredicable disease with no known cause or cure. So time is critical in the race to find a cure. Every dollar I raise hastens the day when Michele and others may walk out of her doctor’s office and leave MS behind.
