A Flying Shoes Hero Rides Across America

February 20, 2007

Don McCabe

In the summer of 2005, my friend and long time colleague, Don McCabe, rode across the southern USA. He was with a group of other cyclists and they spent 9 weeks riding from the Pacific Ocean in California to the Atlantic in Florida. Don put more than 5,000 km on his bike by the time he reached the Atlantic shores in Florida. Don is an inspiration to recreational athletes. He runs regularly, cycles everywhere and spends winter on the ski trails. Don has competed several full marathons. He competed in the Worlds Master Games and is training for the Birkenbiner in Norway. Don and his training partner Gail Wozny will have completed the 3 major Birkie when the cross the Finish Line in Norway this spring! Fitness and sports are a way of life for Don! His spirit is contagious!

Today, I met with the managers of the MS Bike Tour in Alberta and they informed me that I had not only met my fundraising goal but actually achieved it! What a wonderful gift! The support from so many truly amazing Flying Shoes Heroes is absolutley beyond belief! I feel so humbled by the generosity of so many amazing people!

Michele

I called Michele in Brooklyn and told her the good news. She was absolutely amazed at eveyone’s generosity. She knows the money raised will make a difference.  Now, let’s keep it rolling!

Sleepy Sunday Spinners

Alan Spin Training

I have joined the Sleepy Sunday Spinners and have started Spin Training on my indoor Spin Trainer. We are a small group of four and we meet every Sundsay for our riding workouts. Ed and Jen are also training for the MS Bike Tour and after that, they leave for France and 10 days of cycling through France following the Tour De France! Nina has also joined the Sleepy Sunday Spinners and is already riding with no hands and smiling about it. This is her first time riding a bike in many many years!

Nina Spinner

My training with the Sleepy Sunday Spinners is going well. We are a small group of friends all working to get our Heart Rates up and have a good cardio work out. We are using a terrific series of training DVDs that are espeically made for indoor training for road bike riders. Each workout is about 50 minutes to an hour in length with a warm up and cool down. All the compents of a good solid workout are there! I believe that Spinning is a great way for me to get my HR up and stay fit when I can’t ride outside in the snow. I manage to stay in my training zone all through the workouts too. That’s something I never managed to do when I was running. Spinning is also low impact and of course the weather is never a problem for us! Of course after we Spin, there is always time for coffee and bagels!
